Nyjer Seed

Nyjer® seed is a high-protein wild birdseed guaranteed to attract colorful songbirds to your backyard. Also high in oils necessary for the health of wild birds, when given a choice between thistle seed and Nyjer seed, goldfinches will most often choose Nyjer due to its higher oil and caloric content.

Originally from Nigeria, Nyjer® is pronounced NYE-jer, and is sometimes mistakenly referred to as thistle seed, though it is not even related to that noxious weed. The thistle nickname was first adopted by birdseed sellers due to the occasional mispronunciation of the original name. You will want to offer Nyjer birdseed in bird feeders designed for dispensing this tiny seed, ensuring most of it does not end up on the ground, though ground-feeding birds, such as sparrows and quail, will appreciate the seeds dropped by the clinging-type birds which will frequent your Nyjer feeders. Nyjer seed is heat treated in order to sterilize the seeds, helping to prevent the unintentional introduction of a foreign plant species.

Nyjer wild birdseed will attract American Goldfinches, Common Redpolls, Dark-Eyed Juncos, European House Finches, Hoary Redpolls, Indigo Buntings, Lesser Goldfinches, Mourning Doves, Painted Buntings, Pine Siskins, Purple Finches, Towhees and a variety of other songbirds.
