Our Mimulus Flower Seeds are an annual in the majority of the U.S., though it is grown as a perennial in temperate climates, such as that of Southern California. Also known as Monkey Flowers, for the smiling, monkey-like visage present on some of the species, they normally have 1 to 2-inch, colorful flowers and are ideal for mixing with other spring and summer blooming plants. You may have also heard them referred to as Monkey Musk or Musk Flowers. Try using Monkey Flowers in and amongst bold textured succulents, such as the larger agave and aloe plants; this combination is amazing! Mimulus, pronounced MIM-yew-luss, is not picky about soil at all, growing as well in the dappled shade of oaks and conifers as it does on sunny rocky slopes, though good drainage is a necessity. If grown as an annual bedding plant and given plenty of water throughout the spring and summer, they’ll perform beautifully, but will not last long as a perennial. In temperate climates, pinching after the first bloom will produce another flush, but when the flowering ends, stop the watering and allow the plants to rest for the remainder of the summer. Some Monkey Flowers have been known to live for 10 to 12 years when they are allowed to “rest” or go dormant, as in their natural habitat. If grown in this manner, once the wood has hardened, prune off at least one third and up to one half of each stem. This will result in more compact and vigorous plants the following season. All blooming plants require extra sustenance when getting ready to bloom or in bloom. We highly recommend Espoma Flower-tone® or Jungle Flora, both of which are approved for organic gardening, are formulated for blooming plants and are safe for use around your family and pets, as well as being safe for the environment. Each order of our fresh Mimulus seeds is filled by hand, put into a resealable plastic bag and then placed into a labeled seed packet. It is our goal to provide our customers the best in freshness and quality. |
