Hypericum Flower Seeds are the genus name for approximately 400 different species of flowering plants. Known also as St. John’s wort, Rose of Sharon, Aaron’s Beard, Creeping St. John’s wort, Goldflower, and in some cases called Tutsan, you will find them as annuals, perennials and herbaceous shrubs with an almost worldwide presence. Hypericum, pronounced hy-PEER-ih-kum, has the origins for its nicknames in the Bible; St. John’s wort being a reference to John the Baptist and Aaron’s Beard taking its inspiration from Psalm 133:2, alluding to the ointment with which Moses anointed his brother Aaron, the assumption being that oil was extracted from the Hypericum and used, along with other aromatic oils to make the “ointment of sacred consecration”. A nice story, but it is more likely, considering the native origins of St. John’s wort, that it was named for the striking, awesome, fuzzy stamens that give it a “bearded” look. In more modern times, St. John’s wort has been used as a natural remedy for depression, though it has since been rated as “unsafe” for internal use by the U.S.F.D.A. Considered an “invasive weed” in some of the more temperate areas of the world, it makes a fantastic creeping, flowering groundcover. High altitude and low temperatures can keep it from germination, but it can lie dormant for decades until germinating under ideal conditions. Hypericum does not require regular feeding but will benefit from an annual dose of Jungle Flora or Espoma Flower-tone®, both of which are approved for organic gardening and are safe for your family, pets, livestock and water habitats, as well as being specially formulated for blooming plants. Shear Aaron’s Beard back drastically early in the spring as it only flowers on new growth; then feed it and watch it grow! This dramatic ground cover will grow in full sun to full shade, though its blooms will not be as prolific in the shade. Each order of our fresh Hypericum seeds is filled by hand, put into a resealable plastic bag and then placed into a labeled seed packet. It is our goal to provide our customers the best in freshness and quality. |
