Hairy Vetch Seed

hairy vetch cover crop seed for sale

Hairy Vetch Seed is a vine-like, vigorously-growing, cold-tolerant, winter-hardy, annual legume utilized most often as a cover crop and green manure, capable of producing 80 to 250 pounds nitrogen per acre and 3000 to 5000 pounds dry matter. Normally growing 2 to 3 feet in height, when supported by rye, oats or other tall, sturdy grasses and even corn, it can grow to taller heights. Highly adaptable, Hairy vetch will grow in soils with a pH ranging from 4.9 to 8.2, and will thrive in acidic soils where clovers and alfalfa will not. Hairy vetch is more shade-tolerant and drought-resistant than common vetch, but will also withstand short periods of flooding.

Used as green manure, silage, hay or a cover crop, Hairy vetch grows well in cereal grain mixtures and is an excellent spring weed suppressor. Often used as part of a self-seeding mix in orchards for weed control, it has also been used in vineyards and interplanted into vegetable crops or as a winter crop in annual vegetable rotations as a green manure.

The recommended seeding rate is 30 to 45 pounds per acre on new pasture; as needed when mixed.
