Gaillardia Flower Seeds

Gaillardia Flower Seeds are available in both annual and perennial varieties, both of which are highly tolerant of heat and poor soil, being one of the flowers that the settlers first saw when traversing this great nation to settle its vast expanses. Often grown as a naturalizer, Gaillardia, also known as Indian Blanket Flower or just plain Blanket Flower, makes a really nice addition to your cut flower garden, sometimes self-sowing the following year, though not aggressively so.

Gaillardia, pronounced gay-LAR-dee-uh, are also tolerant of salt and humidity, requiring very little care once established. Occasional deadheading will encourage a longer blooming season, but is not absolutely necessary. They are deer and rabbit resistant, most likely due to the slightly hairy leaves that add interest and texture to your garden but seem to tickle the mouths of the varmints. Often described as daisy-like, the blossoms can be compact cushions of petals, or wide, single and double blossoms of layered and overlapped petals, quite often being bicolored. As always, blooming plants will benefit from regular feeding. A water-soluble fertilizer tends to work best, as it slowly releases the nutrients over a period of time. High amounts of nitrogen will result in heavily foliaged plants but fewer blossoms. We recommend Jungle Flora or Espoma Flower-tone®, both of which are approved for organic gardening and are safe for your family, pets, livestock and water habitats, as well as being specially formulated for blooming plants.

The Arizona series of Gaillardia produces 3 1/2-inch, dual colored blossoms, each apricot-colored petal being dipped in vivid yellow for an exceptional display. The cone, which is burnt orange with a golden-green center, draws your eyes inward to the apricot blush gracing these daisy-like petals. Plume Mix Gaillardia Flower Seeds

Our ‘Plume Mix’ Gaillardia Flower Seed may also be known as Annual Blanket Flower Indian Blanketflower or Firewheel. A member of the aster family, the annual Plume Gaillardia is native to the southern U.S. and Mexico, has upright lobed, serrated, grayish-green foliage and produces showy, fully double, sunshiny blossoms that dance upon wiry stems throughout the season. Plume gaillardia are shorter in stature than many, making it more tolerant of high winds, in addition to its tolerance to heat, drought, salt, humidity and poor soils. These 2-inch blossoms of rich red and sunny yellow are fantastic in the garden or in mixed vases displayed throughout your home. Deadheading will encourage a neater appearance and repeat blooming, but leave a few of the seed heads to attract the fall and winter songbirds and to reseed the area.
