Delphinium Flower Seeds

Delphinium Flower Seeds and the flowers they produce have long been a staple of English Cottage Gardens. These rather stately, and always showy, plants produce stout panicles of blossoms that can be up to 6-feet high, the most highly prized color being the blue-hued varieties. Also called Larkspur, many gardeners reserve that term for the annual varieties, using the Latin genus name, Delphinium, for the perennial varieties.

Delphinium, pronounced del-FIN-ee-um, flower seed must be either refrigerated for up to a week or put in the freezer for at least 24 hours prior to sowing in order to ensure that dormancy has been broken. Thriving in areas with cool and moist summers, look for a cultivar that is heat tolerant if you live in an area with hot and dry summers. If you’re growing a tall variety, plant where sheltered from the wind or be ready to provide support for those wonderfully eye-catching, though oft times top-heavy flower spires. Delphinium require a lot of energy in order to produce those fantastic flower spikes, so will benefit greatly from compost or manure being worked into the soil, providing a slow but steady release of nitrogen throughout the season. For the best performance while blooming we recommend supplemental feeding with Jungle Flora or Espoma Flower-tone®, both of which are organically rich and formulated for blooming plants.

Each order of our fresh Delphinium seeds is filled by hand, put into a resealable plastic bag and then placed into a labeled seed packet. It is our goal to provide our customers the best in freshness and quality.
