Strawberries are easy to grow and more flavor than store-bought! Do you need any more reasons to plant strawberries? Then let’s get started! You should choose a place for your strawberry bed that gets at least 6 hours of sun a day. Strawberry plants like moist, but well-drained soil, and choose an area that will be easy to water regularly, as berries also do not tolerate drought well. For a smaller berry patch you might take a look at our Pyramid Space Saver, complete with built-in sprinkler. Spring strawberries will be shipped to you as bare root plants. We have a short video that shows you how easy it is to plant them and that will insure your success. Spring plants should not be allowed to produce fruit the first year; it weakens the plant. So, simply nip the flower buds off during the first year, enjoy the green ground cover, and look forward to the following season’s fantastic crop! Once the first frost has occurred or snow is expected, cut your plants back to about 1”, thin your plants as needed and apply fertilizer; we recommend Plant-tone. Apply a thick layer of mulch, like straw, to protect your young plants, removing the mulch in the spring when new growth appears. This is the most exciting time! Watch them grow and enjoy your harvest! |
