Buckwheat Seed

buckwheat seed for cover cropsBuckwheat Seed is a broadleaf, “phosphorous pumping” cover crop that just happens to be an amazing weed suppressor and soil tilth improver that is also grown as a cash crop for food producers across the world. Actually native to Asia with brown, irregularly-shaped soybean-like seeds that germinate and grow quickly when planted in warm soil, Buckwheat performs very well on just about any type of soil, fertile or not, clay to sand, and makes copious amounts of phosphorous available to the next crop through residue decomposition. Additionally, Buckwheat flowers profusely, attracting those beneficial honey bees and making for attractive looking fields, as well as being a tasty, spinach-like green when the plants are still young.

If growing as a cash crop for grain harvest, Buckwheat should be sown 90 days before the first fall frosts. If growing as a cover crop, cut or incorporate Buckwheat into the soil when only about 10% in bloom, usually 7 to 8 weeks after planting. As a green manure, it is recommended that you plant in late May to mid July in the Northern climes and earlier in the south.

The recommended seeding rate is 40 to 50 pounds per acre on new pasture.
