Athyrium Plants

Athyrium Plants have long been popular for the shaded areas of your yard, but are now also becoming popular for planting in containers and hanging baskets.

Athyrium, (pronounced a-THIH-ree-um) also commonly called Fern, requires soil that is high in organic matter.  If you don’t have rich soil or access to compost we recommend using Neptune's Harvest or Jungle Flora, both of which are organic, liquid soil conditioners. Fern plants will also perform best in soil that is kept consistently moist and mulched in order to keep their root system cool. Many of our customers have found that preparing fern beds with Tera-Sorb results in exceptional water retention, significant monetary savings and means that your ferns will require less individual attention, saving you time.

Autumn Athyrium Plant

Price $5.75

The 'Autumn' Athyrium Plant is more correctly known as Japanese Red Shield Fern, but has been dubbed 'Autumn' due to its coloration; though the pinky-orangey-coppery color appears in the spring, not in the fall. Many ferns have orange fiddleheads that turn green, but 'Autumn's' color lasts quite a bit longer; in fact, as new growth appears, those signature coppery colors will intersperse with the mature green. A somewhat untidy fern, the growth can appear tangled, but is prized by those gardeners who like their gardens to grow "au naturale". 3" Pot Size.
